There was an abundance of work af EUerslie this morning. Galloping was carried out on the course pro per, where the flags were out about 30 feet, and also on the No. 1 grass, both tracks being in jrerfect order. On the course proper, Tetrachate and Royal Tea ran the best half mile in 50 4-ssec, both hitting out well.

Eager Rose, who is to contest the Te Awamutu Cup, was associated with Patutahi in a working gallop' over a mile in 1.51, the last five furlongs taking 1.10 2-5. Corinax galloped seven furlongs in 1.32 4-5, doing it well. He is coming on with every gallop. Llanore and Gay Idea were responsible for the best half mile in 49 2-ssec. Llanore went particularly well, and should pick up a stake during' the holiday meetings.

TEN PER CENT. BETTING TAX

PASSED IN N. SAY. tAuso. arid N.Z. Cable) Sydney, Dec. 10The Legislative Assembly Bill to •levy a 10 per cent, tax on winning bets, to yield ,£2,000,000, has passed all its stages and operates on December 20. NOTES AND COMMENTS 11. Gray rode five winners at the Taumarunui meeting last week. Historic figures amongst the nominations for the Manawatu Cup, and so does Gay Crest. Wee Prince will be ridden by C. Goulsbro in the Waipa Plate next j next Saturday. The Riccarton trainer, A. Mc- | Aulay, leaves next Tuesday with Nightmarch and True Shaft for the | Auckland meeting. True Shaft ran a good race at Ashburton as he was giving First Raid ialbs. over six furlongs, run in 1.11 4-5. Marble King is credited with a rather smart performance at Taumaruuui, where lie won over a mile and three-quarters in 3.11 1-5. Solwit, the winner of the Laglimor Plate at Ashburton, was got by Solferino from Scotch Wit, by The Ace—Scottish Star, by Clanranald- | the winners at Gosford on November 25 included Plateau, a three year old filly, by Tea Tray from Vicereine, the dam of Gold Tinge, j Overhaul has built up into good solid condition and looks in fine healthy order for another preparation (says a Dunedin paper). J. 11. Prosser has decided on a trip to Auckland with Great Star, who may pay his way in sprint events at the northern holiday fixture. I The King: Mark gelding: Cruachan, who won at Taumarunui, is a half-brother to lfymestra and Torfreda, both of whom could go very fast. , y . . . j The name Rose Latour has been registered for a three year old filly by General Latour from Wee Rose This filly is a half-sister to Eager Rose and will carry the same colours when her time arrives for racing. | The Victorian Racing C.lub has completed arrangements with Sir George Julius for the installation of the totalisator at -Flemington. Every endeavour will be made to have the machines, in operation for the Grand National meeting in July.

- Ball Dress, who carried Sir Charles Clifford’s colours into the first• placing at Ashburton on Saturday, is a three year old filly by

Winning flit from Equipment. Last season she was saddled up on a dozen occasions for a couple of seconds land Itlie same number of thirds.

Mr J. A. Beale intends to be epresented by Arrowmir and Bulolo at some of the North Island holiday meetings, and has nominated the pair for the Waipukurau fixture, to be held on Boxing Day. W. Stone has also nominated Lord Thomond, Painkiller and Tray Bond for the same meeting Uavs the Christchurch Press).

The Feramorz gelding Stonehenge, w ho got amongst the win- , ners at Taumarunui, has not been much good on the turf, but has an interesting pedigree. His dam. Marble Star, was got by Marble Arch—Cydena, by Oyrenian—Etona by Castor from Lady Walmsley, a sister to Caching. Tn 18S7 Lochie.l von the New Zealand Cup, nnd in 18S8 captured the Auckland Cup. ran a dead heat with Indigo, in the New Zea-| land Cup in, 1914, and in the follow-; ing month beat- Reputation by a head for first honours in the Auckland Cup. Scion won lie double in 1922, and Rapier did likewise in IQ-7-The death of Mrs C. G. Dalgety on Saturday removed a keen supporter of racing (says the Christchurch Press). She took a lively interest in the breeding and careers of the horses carrying Mr Dalgety’s colours, and last year figured as the owner of the Martian fillv Netley, purchased by her as a yearling at Trentham. The Riccarton trainer, W. G. Hobbs, is not doing anything it present with the two year old Jordan, who may not be raced again

until next, season. The race record of this gelding* will be followed with some interest, as his sire, Jericho (by Archery), and his dam Palestrina (by Clarenceux), both claim the Martian mare Judith as their dam.

The victory of Lady Quex in the Feilding- Stakes was one of the most decisive in the history of the race. Lady Quex did not begin too well, and after going a furlong she was four lengths behind anything else in the race. She put in a brilliant run at the finish, and not only caught the speedy Supremacy, but won going away by a length. It was an outstanding performance and shows how brilliant the daughter of Lord Quex —White Clover is when well.

The only previous winners in the field for the Railway Handicap to be run at the suwmer meeting of the Auckland .Club this year arc Awarcre, who won in iy 27, and Hunting Cry, who won last year. Last year Paganelli was awarded topweight (y. 12), but did not start, and Cimabue (y.2) was topweight on the dav. Cimabue has 9.4 this year, and Paganelli has been dropped to 8.5.

Sargon’s meritorious performance in the Alison Cup will earn him many more supporters for his Great Northern Derby engagement. Since racing at Takapuna the Catmint gelding has not lost any of his soreness, but as he won so well at Takapuna after being in such a state a month prior to the meeting, track watchers are wondreing just how good he really is (says “Whalebone,” in the Auckland Star).

Sneer, a six year old gelding by Cynic from Jena, recently acquired in Gisborne by the Auckland sportsman, H. Rama, was given a schooling lesson over the pony hurdles afc Ellerslic on Tuesday, and registeied a very encouraging display. As his sire won a Great Northern Hurdles and his dam threw a Grand National Steeplechase winner n Peter Maxwell, Sneer lias a pedigree which suggests possibilities as a jumper, and it will be interesting to see how he progresses as his preparation advances.

A recent cable message from Perth (W.A.) told us of the New Zealand-bred Jemidar having met with an accident that necessitated his destruction. Press reports now to hand show that he fell during a training gallop and broke his shoulder. Jemidar, who was foaled in 10-3; was got by Martian from the All Red mare Ayah. He did not do much good in the land of his birth, his only win being a-s a three year old in the Novice Plate, six furlongs, at Woodville. Early in his four year old season he was sold for Westralia, where he won several races, among them the Perth Cup, when he was a five year old.
