COST OF LIVING
QUITE HIGH ENOUGH
A WARNING TO MERCHANTS (Per Press Association). Wellington, Aug. 26. The cost of living insofar as price fixation is concerned was consideied at a special meeting of railway officers. It was alleged that a concerted movement was on foot in one particular trade ostensibly for the purpose of fixing wholesale and retail prices. A resolution was carried unanimously : That this meeting of railway officers views with alarm the action of merchants and grocers combining for the purpose of fixing the prices of foodstuffs, which action must inevitably recoil to the grave disadvantage of the consumer. This meeting also regards such action, m view of the serious financial position of the country, as being taken at a time when the public is quite unable to meet the slightest increase in the cost of living.
