Madame Krupskaija, Lenin’s widow, who directs the activities of the Bureau of Political Education in Moscow, has ordered the libraries in Soviet Russia to destroy all copies of many philosophical and religious works, including the Bible, the Koran and the Talmud, the works by Plato, Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Herbert Spencer. Recent investigations showed that many libraries had acquired religious works through confiscation. These must now be burned. How well Auckland’s rat-catching campaign has kept the pest down in the business area of the city is revealed by the fact that the daily activities of the trappers during the year which ended on March 31, resulted in the capture of an average of only about 10 rats a day. All the rats caught are sent to the pathological department of the hospital for examination for signs of infection or disease. Last year’s capture totalled 378°, against 4633 in the previous year. The number of cases of diphtheria in the Wellington city and suburban districts last year was 395. There were 20 deaths from the disease. The Medical Officer of Health in his annual report says : “The importance of early medical attention and the. administration of anti-toxin, 'where necessary, in all possible cases of diphtheria is again apparent. Parents and guardians should also recognise that great care is necessary in' convalescence after diphtheria in the matter of restricting the movements of the patient.”
