BRITAIN AND EGYPT
CANAL ISSUE SETTLED BUT THERE ARE OTHER QUESTIONS (Aust. and N.Z. Cable) (Received April 16, 11 a.m.) London, April 15. It is learned (hat Now Zealand's and Australia’s vital concern in the Augio-Egyptian treaty negotiations, file Suez Canal, lias been satisfactorily sot. led. It is stilt (d that (heir requirements regarding tlio Canal will he held sacred and guaranteed, hut there will be .som.t slight modifications in thi Mahmaud draft treaty by which possibly the Egyptians will Tiave some nominal part in the joint conTroi. It is expected that to-night’s parley will be momentous as it is sta.cd that Britain is determined to settle the Sudan question during the sitting and if the Egyptians do not agree to the proposals from this morning’s special meeting of tin* Cabinet the British delegates are prepared t,o si, up a!,I night while the Egyptians retire ,to think matters over, and if they are still not agreeable tho British might imnuUiaitely conclude the parleys. Practically ail the clauses have been settled, excepting four points, including tin-' major Sudan issue. Also, tlie Egyptians demand that they alone should decide when Egyptian t r °ops are competent t° guard the Canal. It is unlikely that Mr Henderson will make the slightest, compromise on sueli a, proposal.
