ALLOCATION OF FUNDS £I2OO SPENT SINCE OCTOBER Since tli© Herbert Smith Fund trustees expressed embarrassment last October with regard to their difficulty in sending tli e £IO,OOO entrusted to them by the lat© Mr Herbert Smith for encouraging athletics among children, hey have had a* Aery busy time dealing with applications for grants and trophies. Up to October last when the trustees, Messrs C. B. Smith and R. English, of Hamilton, had been admintering the fund for nearly a year tli e sum of £7OO had been allocated. Since then over £I2OO has been spent. The competitions for which trophies have been aAvarded include harriers, route marching, skipping,
swimming, l athletics, primary and secondary school sports, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides* activities, hockey tennis, basketball football and cricket. Applications received from all over New Zealand liav© been granted. Special attention has been given to schools and organisations in the hack blocks and many native children have been beneiited. Tlie letters roce'.ved by the trustees testify to the enthusiasm that has been stimulated among the children in connection with •their outdoor games by the receipt of cups alid shields presented by the trustees It is felt that the testator’s wishes ar© being fully complied with by the donation of prizes. In particular. great stimulus lias been given to swimming as. a result of the generosity of th e lat e Mr Smith.
