GRAZIERS’ REWARD IN AUSTRALIA SHOULD BE £1,000,900. In a statement, Senator Laly, Minister in chudge of the Council of Scientific Research in Australia, exhorts file pas'oralists of Australia to provide “something in tlie region of £1,000.000” to help fight the blowfly problem in Australia. “The reported offer of the South Australian pastoralists of a reward of £IOOO to anybody who could discover a remedy for the slieep blowfly [>est is of great interest,” be said, “In indicating that tli e pustoralist of Australia are coming lo appreciate the gravity of tlie problem, and the part which science can play in its solution.
“If It is true, as has often been stated, that th e blowfly pest is the worst of all Australia’s many pests, and that the annual losses (mostly incurred by pastoralists), run into about three or four million jiounds per annum, one might expect that the w hole of Australia would get together and put up something, either as a reward or more specifically for research, in tlie region of £1,000,000 rather than £3000.” The Council of Scientific and industrial Research already has a considerable staff engaged on researeli into this problem wbieli forms a complete research section of the Division of Economic Entomology, of which Dr. Tilyard is chief. This section is under tlie charge of Dr. I. M. Mackerras, as senior entomologist and he lias as liis assistants Dr. F. G. Iloldaway, working in France, and Miss M. Fuller, working in Canberra.
