TE PUKE MAN’S INSPIRATION
COMBINATION VEHICLE
OUT TO SEE THE WORLD

Tramping to Auckland at the present time is an -elderly, bewhiskered man wearing a > grizzilv beard and torn and tattered clothing, who looks as if he had stepped out of one of Steele Rudd’s books.
He is leading an attenuated horse, which is drawing an old motor chassis upon which is erected a covered framework. The old man is William Cameron, of Te Puke, who has set out to se the country aud to spend some time In the big cities. His appearance on the streets of Hamilton this morning created considerable interest, • and lie was followed by a crowd to the border of the town. Disdaining trains and service cars, lie told a pressman that this was how be thought to spend the next few; weeks. Asked if he was looking for work, lie replied emphatically “No.” He would not mind,
however, taking on fruit farming if prospects were favourable. He said be bad sufficient capital for this purpose.
At night he draws bis car van along a by-road and settles himself to rest. The interior of the vehicle presents a strange sight, being a coinpleto jumble of clothes, saucepans, blankets, oilskins and other details. ,
An elderly lady noticing the caravan in Victoria street this morning, and thinking tlio old man was hard up, offered him a- shilling, - hut .he politely hut firmly declined it. He was unable to say when he expected to arrive in Auckland, but hoped to arrive there fairly soon.
