HINT OF RETRENCHMENT
THE FORESTRY DEPARTMENT IS NOT AFFECTED. The hint of retrenchment by the Hon. A. J. Stullworthy in Auckland has given rise to a rumour that the Forestry Department is to be merged with tile Department of Lands. “There is not the slightest foundation for the re]>ort,” stated the Commissioner of State Forests, Hon. AY. B. Taverner, when the matter was brought under his notice. ‘The Forestry Department is being conducted along sound lines and is daily becoming of increasing value to the State.” i The Minister added that the day had passed when the Department of Land s could administer the work of afforestation which had extended so rapidly that some years ago it was realised it was essential to have a separate depart incut.
