ATTITUDE OF THE FARMERS
At the annual meeting of the- Taranaki Chamber of Commerce AD G. Carter, chairman of the- immigration committed of tip chamber, made a conprchensivo ireport of' the committee’s activities, in view of criticism that the oil amber desired to bring out English public school hoys and plaecj them on. farms to the detriment of New Zealand boys.
Referring toi criticism by Mr J. S. Fletcher, At.lk, fur 'Grey Lynn, the report stated ti.'at the comm it tee Did attempted to co-operate with AL* Fletcher in his plan to place Auckland boys on Taranaki farms. Advertisements were inserted in Taranaki newspapers inviting farmers willing to take New Zealand boys to send in applications to the secretary, but after some few days the only application, was from one of the committee’s own English hoys, who was needing assistance, as ho was farming on liis own account and was unable to- procure, an English boy. It was not to bo inferred from This that farmers were not in need of boys, but that they were not in need of the boys that Air Fletcher offered to procure.
Air W. J. Frey tic, of Pukcaruho, said lio knew of one hoy who had been in bho country for only throe years, and in addition -to possessing a. motor-cycle and 'belonging to a lodge- he had saved £2OO. He thought if hoys'].ikq that could save LoOT and then .sonnet scheme could be devised to subsidise them. with a similar amount, .they oculd get their own farms.
