QUESTION OF TITLES
CA XA DIA X ATTITUDE
(Aust. and N.Z. Cable). Ottawa, Eeb. 14
In the Canadian. House of Commons to-day a- motion by Mr C. H. Caban (Conservative) to refer to a
naniititee the question of the Soveigd granting titles or other disiicns to civlians was defeated by votes to CIO. -he .{Pfrime Alijnis/tcr ''(Air Al’ac-
mde King), during the-debate, said that he saw not objection ito the motion in the form in which* it was moved.
Tim Minister of Railways (Mr Darning) said that not one member of the Government favoured the restoration ol titles. It was unthinkable that any Committee of the House would recommend restoration, but the main idea, was to inquire into the removal of anomalies which iexisted. However, since it wa s ap•parenrj that it would be interpreted as a move to restore titles, probably it would be better not. to pass' the motion. One anomaly, Air Dunning said, was that universities could give honorary degrees as a, distinction, biff- the King could not.
Air Caha.ii sa d that lie had no personal. desire to return to the, bestowal of titles, but he thought that the message sent too, the King in 1010 was embarrassing to FT i.s Alajesty. Canada, was the only civilised country where the Government wa s unable to, grant a distinction for meritorious service. He urged that some Order; of Merit, or other difiiinetion, should be created.
In 1010 tlto House carried a motion which requested the King not to( grant titles to Canadians except for m i 1 i tary d i ski n oti on.
