TO LIMIT NAVIES
BRITAIN WILL MOVE STATEMENT BY AMBASSADOR By Telegraph-Press Assn-Copyright (Aust. and N.Z. Cable). (Received Fob. 26, 8.55 n.m. ) ( Washington, Feb. 15. The British Ambassador, the Hon. Howard, announced to-day that Britain would soon initiate efforts to bring about a- further limitation ol naval armaments between the principal naval Powers ol' the world. The delay in the passage by Congrats of the Cruiser Bill had retarded The British efforts towards further disarmament, hut now that measure had boom enacted, the ground wn,s cleared for a new discussion. Any new negotiation would certainly proceed on the assumption that the recently authorised cruisers would ho built. BETTER hope Of 1 SUCCESS Air Howard added: “The English elections which* take place in the summer may, however, postpone any discussion ol this kind lor some months longer. The disarmament clause of the Covenant of the League of Nations’ Article 8 makes it practically imperative that all members of tlie League should make further efforts forwards the restriction of armaments. The United states has hitherto shown itself favourable to the idea, of continuing negotiations for an agreement in this sense, and it' would therefore seem thnjti everything points towards an early resumption of negotiations, and with a. far better understanding of the needs of the respective parties than existed at Geneva, in 1927, there should he a. very good prospect of their being brought to a. satisfactory conclusion.”
