MURDER AND LOOT
CONDITIONS IN KABUL (Ausv and N.Z. Cable), Delhi, February 3. Terrible stories of conditions in Kabul are painted by members of the Legation .who arrived at Peshawar.
There is a famine in the city. a. small piece of bread fetching 3d The city is thronged with wild, 'hungry tribesmen, who are prevented from leaving by the snow'. The bazaars are empty, the houses barricaded, and tilns streets choked with refuse and deserted till night, when there are appalling scenes, with murder and looting. Gangs 0 f tribesmen, roam the city, breaking open houses and looting food clothing and furniture, bartering this latter for food. Occupants who resist are murdered..
The populace is becoming- dissatisfied with the rule of the rebel rihief, who fears 1 assassination.
AJi Ahmed Jan is seeking to bonrow £15,000 from the .Pedhawur traders to finance his attach on Kabul early in the spring. All Amanullah’s, reforms have disappeared. The Kabul girls’ schools are closed. Women have been order ed to wear veils and puggarees have replaced 'European headgear.
