OLD MAORI CARVINGS
SPLENDID SPECIMEN {FOUND

Some splendid specimens of ancient Maori carving have been dug up recently on a, farm at Thornton, and have been secured by Air H. J. S. Johnstone, of Whakatunc. One piece is a portion of a Maori patuka or food house, and 'is in. a very good state of preservation. It has all the characteristics of the old Maori art and it is thought, that it must have been caivud some 100 years ago. There is also (iiiii upright-, apparently of the .same patuka, ‘wh.bh lis not quite so well preserved, hut must be a valuable specimen, the carving being similar to the other piece in workmanship.
Ju add tum 1 to the piece of carving from t!rfe> patuka, a carved prow of a canoe was found on the same property.
