“Don'i, talk to ns about hedgehogs being good lor clearing gardens of snails and slabs,” said a Kio Kio set tier. ‘‘They are a. real post anil have great- weakness for eggs. They clean up garden pests till right, hut one duck will eat as many slttgis and snails in a day as a. hedgehog will in a month. The hedgehog' in this district, and also in the Kawa, swamp, cat a- great many eggs of wild (lucks, pukeko and turkeys. . There is, of course, the close season during the year, but T suspect that- not a. few casualties occur in the more remote part iS the district, despite *ho rangers. Personally, I believe that shooting should be prohibited altogether for one year, at least. -Such a. respite would have very beneficial effects,”
