They were a. portion of the HongKong garrison, and were loaned by the Governor as the result of a rum. cured attempt to seize the vessel. The rumour emanated irom the recent. piraev ot the Chinese steamer Hsinwah, which, was oflicered by foreigners. The leader of the pirates informed the Chinese pursuer that he was disappointed with the Hsinwah piracy and proposed next to seize some big British or American vessel. ( The guard was placed on the Empress of Canada, in order lo ease the minds of passengers.
