FEDERATION A FAILURE
TOWN EDITION
FOP, SOUTH AUSTRALIA (Aust. and N.Z. Cable), ('Received Deo. 22, noon) 7 Adelaide, Dec. 22. According to : the committee appointed by the State Government toreport on the evidence submitted to the Royal Commission, on the disabilities of federation, as far as Sonth Australia is concerned, it has proved a. failure. The report says South Australia is uitdble! to meet-her liabilities with the iriiposiiion of destructive taxation out of all proportion to that levied v the ,other States. As the result •of, federation the people -and.- industries of South Australia have laboured many years under a burden of taxation materially heavier than that imposed on other States. Unless steps are - taken, to rprnedy this condition the contrast between prosperity in the manufacturing States in the'east and the stagnation in tlie primary producing States in the west must inevitably result in the creation of a. spirit of resentment which mights even endanger federation.
