BRILLIANT BATTING
TOWN EDITION
BY THE NEW ZEALANDDRS LAST CAM If OF TOUII TNTEUESTI.NO I),ETA I I.s (Aust. and N.Z. Cable). (U 000 i ved Sep l. 13, 1 p. i n.) London, Sept. 12. The New Zealanders, who have earned a. reputation as the keenest hard hitting exponents of the cariX 'free amateur style in cricket. are making an extremely worthy and appropriate ending at Scarborough to their tour. They .are opposed by a . first class team chosen by l.oveson-Cmver, almost wholly amateurs, and there has been an exhibition of cricket for the sake of game, and : not for the sake of the result. Blunt's first day innings of >3l is still talked of. He hit everything with a, terrific crash in / the centre of his bat, expertly clearing til© head of corner pout, but grow more careless in tbo later stages of the game. Another masterpiece of play was Mills’s exhibition of that left hander’s best style,, particularly bis pull to mid-wicket and hi-s glance to fine leg. Me failed to add many to-day, scoring 152. In al Ihe had. 11 fours and six threes. Lowr.v was indisposed and 1 herofore unable to bat. Tlie lasi four wickets fell quickly and the innings in all lasted *5-2 hours. Leveson-Cower’s pncn started off well, and making a good reply for a time, 100' coming up in 9-5 minutes, principally from-Dawson and 'Wyatt’s hats, Dawson hitting seven, lours. 'file batting then .slackened an 1 at the tea adjournment four wickets had gone lot- L 56 runs. Shortly after resuming Prim'-s; Mary's arrival at 4.30 temporarily stopped play, the spent).-,-rs rushirg to the ground to see. her. This episode may have unsettled ihe batsmen, for two more wickets fell at once. Douglas and F. Milligan, however, by, solid and slow batting stopped a collapse, taking 60 minutes to coinpile -37 runs. Stumps were drawn at, 6.20. The rate of scoring was in great contrast to the way the New Zealanders piled up the, runs on Sa-fcur-dav. \
(This, match was scheduled for two days only, hub apparently there is *to bo another day’s play.)
