PAYMENT OF POLTICIANS
Without exception, the daily newspapers of the Dominion have utterly condemned members of our Parliament for daring to ask for a jjise of salary. We ,must confess that our 5? • .... sympathy, is with the members. Doing into politics is an expensive game, and staying in is a constant drain upon the pockets of' the politician, lie who can make it pay on his honorarium'must have Aberdeen blood in his make-up. II is said the Labour members in Parliament can save money on iheir political pay. We very much doubt it. Members of the 1 louse are worthy of generous lenumeration, and that is why we do not condemn even a request for £t:r»o per annum. But we do emphatically protest: against the movement for a superannuation fund, solidly endowed by the Treasury, for members of Parliament. The vast majority of them do not stay in the House long l enough to earn a life pension. As for members of the Connell, they are lucky in getting their seven years’ sentences, without deserving further reward.
