The Feilding Star Oroua and Kiwitea Counties' Gazette SATURDAY, JULY 17, 1926. THE POUND OF FLESH.

What a. contrast Britain presents to America, in the matter of dealing with the war debts of her Allies. Britain’s taxpayers are heaviest taxed people in the world, yet they are in Full agreement with their statesmen in Following oiit the golden rule in dealing with Italy and France with regard to the debts those two nations owe to Britain For money borrowed to help complete the Great War. “Forgive ns our debts as we Forgive our debtors.” Britain’s international golden rule, She has been wonderfully generous towards Italy and France, despite the long wait For a settlement. Britain not only financed the war, but she fought it as no other nation did. America only came in to help to do a little washing up, yet she has demanded the uttermost farthing in the repayment of money borrowed by Britain, France and Italy to help them keep Germany from invading America! The Americans actually made millions in money, out of the war whilst the Allies were bleeding themselves white in America’s defence. A few noble spirited American writers urged their -Congress to forego claiming the war debts, a.s a thank offering for the debtors having saved America from invasion. But those practical Altruists were laughed out of court. Today, when .Britain has forgiven France a large part of her debts, Americans are wondering at Frenchmen pointing the linger of scorn and derision at the Shy lock amongst nations who, demands hi.s pound of llesh.
