SYMPATHY
The Ohairman expressed regret at the absence through illness of the President, Mr V. E. -Smith, and lelt sure members would he delighted to have him well again to preside over their meetings.
THE COMMITTEE
Mr Fitzpatreik proposed that -Mr A. E. Sandiord lie appointed to the vacancy „on the Committee caused f by the resignation of Mr T. S, Tomlinson.
Aft- Coblie seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.
ASSOC! A TED CH AMBERS
A copy of the minutes of the meeting of the Executive of the Associated Cha'mhers was read. It was reported that the Executive had*approached the Postal Department and requested a. reduction in telephone charges, nowthat the Department was showing a profit. The Department’s reply was that even a small reduction would result in a loss, and that though toll fees had increased the telegraph branch had suffered in consequence.— Tlie Minister of Internal ,Affairs had intimated that correspondence to promoters of certain art unions outside tire Dominion would be prohibited. - The Invercargill. Chamber bad suggested the increase of the value of the, penny to make a ten-penny shilling, as. a step towards decimal coinage, and it had been, resolved to place the matter on the order paper for the next conference. —Banks are to he asked to make the colourings of the hank notes more uniform.— The next conference of Chambers is to be held at Wellington on November 17 and 18. The report was received.

AMERICAN DITTIES Mr J. 0. Eliott, M.P., acknowledged receipt of a copy of the letter of the Minister of Customs to the Chamber, in which the Minister re-. I’crred to the duty placed by the United States on New Zealand dairy produce.. Mr Eliott stated he would support any measures for securing full protection for goods of British manufacture and a tightening up against countries whose tariff operates to th,e detriment °f New Zealand products.—-Received. CAMPSITES The Town Clerk wrote stating the Borough Council was making provision for camp sites for touring motorists at Johnston Park.—Receiovd. AMBULANCE The Town Clerk stated in a letter, that the Borough Council had discussed the proposal for an ambulance, to he'stationed! in FeUding* for the conveyance of patients to the Palmerston North Hospital. It had been decided to ask the Oroua and Kiwitea counties to co-operate with the Borough Council in endeavouring to secure tills vehicle, and it was further suggested that all money collected in Feiiding for hospital comforts should go towards the purpose of an ambulance, —Received. THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION ' From the Hon. R. A. Wright!, Minister, of Education, a letter was received acknowledging receipt of the Chamber’s congratulations and the invitation to visit F’eildinn. Title Minister would accept the invitation as soon as it fvas possible to do so. Mr Eliott stated he had reminded the Minister of the invitation, and Mr Wright, replied that lie hoped shortly to visit Feiiding. TftANKS . Messrs J. P. Petrie, T. S. Totnlisnson, and W. McAllister, who had deft Feiiding, acknowledge receipt of letters from the Chamber conveying good' wishes.—-[Received. ELECTRICITY The Secretary presented a report on the electricity supplied by the Power Board. The report stated the quality of -the light compared very unfavomiably with that formerly sup-
plied by the ; Borough Council in .Feilding. • Further, the Mnnawatu--oroua. Power Board’s charges for current were higher than those of neighbouring Boards, and the retail charges made by the Palmerston North Borough Council were lower than those of the Power Board, although. the Power Board sold the current to the P.N Council. Mr Desmond said he had ascertained that large consumers like the Cheltenham Dairy Co had to pay more for current than similar large consumers would pay >u ether districts. The Chairman proposed’ that a subcommittee comprising the President, Mr Desmond and the Secretary he appointed to confer with the Borough Council with the object of making a strong protest to the Power Board against the quality of the light in Feilding and the charges made for electricity. Seconded bv Mr Mann and carried.

The Chairman referred to the lact that Air G. Bartholomew was about to take a trip to America. In the of the Chamber, the Clmirman wished Air Bartholomnew a very pleasant voyage and: safe return, and that lie would continue his work, us a member of the Chamber. Mi* Bartholomnew thanked the Chamber for the good wishes expressed.
BIRTISH TRADE OOMAITSSIONER
The secretary proposed that Air L. B. Beale, the British Trade Commissioner in New Zealand be invited to give an address to the Chamber on or abolut July 14. Seconded by Air Sumner and’ agreed to.
NEW MEMBER. W. Ray worth. Ltd., was elected a. member of the Chamber. The meeting closed at 0.25 p.m..
