TRAP -LYALL BAY BATHERS NINE SEPARATE RESCUES (Press Association Telegram.) Wellington, Jan, 3. Heavy seas riming at Lyall Bay to-day trapped many bathers. Ihe Lyall Bay' and Maraniit surf clubs were instrumental in elloeting nine separate rescues. Though some of the bathers were in a serious condition, all were eventually brought round.
Aliens in Australia —?—— COMPLAINT OF I M I » X RETURNED SOLDIERS’ PROTEST. Three motions dealing with the influx of foreigners into Australia was before the Federal Congress of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers’ League at Perth recently. The first motion, from the Tasmanian branch, protested against the. influx of large numbers of migrants from Southern Europe, as being prejudiced. Hothe; best interests of the Empire.. West Australiaj! branch protested, against the indiscriminate introduction of aliens and undesirables, and urged a more vigorous policyj/of Briy tisli immigration. The Queensland branch’s motion desired the Federal and State Governments to. take instant action to see that-The country was peopled with British stock. , Mr T. J. Ford (Queensland) said that most of flic foreigners were going to Queensland. Australians cori-y sidered themselves of a higher standard than these people. There were plenty of British people willing to go to Northern Queensland if the facilities were offered for migration and absorption. There would he spymany foreigners there soon "that if trouble arose there would be grave danger. Air F. Mariott (Tasmania) said that the league’s slogan should not he a “White A.uslalia,” but a “British Australia.” . . _ Mr CV S. Tnidgian (Queensland) > said that people of North Queensland feared that within five or 10 years they would be out-voted by Southern Europeans and- foreigners, vvho hacl got the best of the sugar lands, and "were' pul ling.'everything down to their standards.
