CHEERFUL NOTE.
ON THE STOCK EXCHANGE. NO DANGER. OF BANK' BATE GOING UP. (Aust. and N.Z. Cable) London, January 2. The Shock- .Exchange closed the year on a cheerful note, I lie re being a quietly' optimistic tone in> almost 'all. markets. ,Gilt-edged securities showed Jirmness all round, foreign bonds Were more steady, and 1 home rails were well supported, owing to the increased traffic receipts. Industrials have been quiet, but there has been- considerable . activity ih oil •shares, apparently due to/ recognition of the fact that the outlook for the oil industry has been steadily improving' for some time. There is a general impression that confidence w r ill lie apparent when the markets reope non Monday, and as one financial newspaper says: “On all hands signs aye not lacking that; activity may be expected throughout, the Stock Exchange; for not' since 1911 have the conditions been so favourable to the investor.”
Another financial writer says: “'lhe danger of a, further early rise in the bank rate is regarded as having passed, and the veal-end rise in sterling on New- York is certainly very encouraging,. hence gilt-edged stocks will probably be fairly maintained until the long awaited trade revival show's signs of development.
