OVERSEA MAILS.
DR. I’ll ACKER'S REPLY. Press Assoeim-iniW Christchurch, Dec. 30. Dr. Thacker lias replied to Mr A. T. Markman repeating Ills declarations that mails to England are needlessly slow. He expresses astonishment that a responsible public servant should make such a mistake as to declare that the air mail crossed the United States in 30 hours. The actual time, Dr. Thacker declares, is •18 hours. Trans-Pacific mail steamers might, lie says, lie speeded, up to make the journey 48 hours faster. They would connect with the air mail and with Ihe fast Atlantic steamers which are available, now giving a 22 days’ service to London for those ready to pay express charges for urgent letters. Dr. Thacker repeals his former statement that the actual time by the mails in transit is much more than the official figures show, and he instances lettei's posted by himself in London on November 8 to catch the Vancouver mail, which!, he dficlnres, 1 look 'l2 Co reach ChrisLcirurch.
