TWELVE MONTHS’ FIRES.
AUCKLAND PUTS UP RECORD. FALSE ALARM NUISANCE. Press Association. Auckland, Dec. 20. Tn spite, of the I'aci’that the year Ivimcu is just drawing to a* close was a. record for the number of calls) received by the Auckland-'Fire''Brigade, it was a very poor year from the 1 lire fie lids point of view, as apart from fin- blaze on the-steamer' Kent Thero was no really big' lire in the Auckland, Did as the harbour is outside the actual district served by the brigade flint sensational marine disaster does .not actually come into tluv records of the city. It was, however, the Auckland brigade which saved the Kent, as it lias a Working arrangement with the .Auckland. ' Harbour authorities, -and the feat was one of the finest put up by our very (Hi ioient brigade.
'Hie total number, of calls received since January' 1 up to to-day was 3on, and of that number 205 were fires 7] false alarms, ‘29 chimney' fires, 41 rubbish or gorse fires, and 9 were out. of the district.
Tiie man who gives lalse. alarms is the greatest m-gstery 'in town to sane people, but be still persists in spite-of educatio naiul'countless warnings. For a city the six of Auckland, 71 false alarms, is too many. It seems absolutely incredible that so many people of perverted ideas could exist side by side with, all the advantages of education that exist to u day: Of the false alarms 42 were maliciously given, siy were ‘ due to line faults, four 'were caused by electrical installations in private. premises, seven were given accidentally, and eight were given, with good intention.
