TRAINING OF TEACHERS.
THE UNIVERSI TY coil.mission (far Press Association^ Dunedin, July 20. T)m University Commission this morning'heard Professor Strong, dean of the Home Science faculty. S ic. stated that a better high school preparation was necessary. Matriculation did imt carry girls to the standard at which students norma 11 began to work for a degree, so that the home science course had to include elementary teaching properly belonging to the secondary school. In order to provide for the development of the extension of teaching, one lulltime I ecu Lre r was required, assisted liv a part-time expert. The stall also required supplementing for teacher training by an assistant fur .supervision in the practice of teaching. • new hostel was needed, with individual rooms lor 7b or H!() students. A dean of women should he appoint ml to attend to the welfare of all women .students. The first.aim of the school was to train teachers. At present limy were unable to supply those required. In reply to Mr Tate, witness said that most who had gone through the degree coni sc had had bursaries. .Mr Tate suggested Ilial instead ol more money being asked lor buisnries it should he spent jn providing more teachers and the development ol the faculty.
