CHAFF.
BROBORED INCREASE LX RAIL WAY CARRIAGE RATE.
On the motion of Mr A. J. Fellow, the Chamber of Commerce last night adopted ihe following motion : That the proposed increase in the rate for the carriage of chaff will he detrimental to the interests of farmers of this district, v.ho are now barely able to compete against importations from Australia m the Auckland market.
Mr Ivellow said members were aware that this district, / with Hawke’s Bay and the Wairarapa, did large business- wifclYiAuckland. The proposed increase in the carriage rate, from this district to Auckland would amount fo 4s err ton. and as i t was' very hard for Tarmers at present to compete aga'inest 'imported chafl', the increase would probably kill the local trade. Consequently, „o oats would be grown for export from the district, and the Railway Department would lose revenue. Even at the present time the farmers were receiving for their chaff «- price below the cost of production. Mr Buist seconded the motion, emphasising tho points made by Mr Follow. The more the Railway Department increased : the tariff the loss business they won Id. get. At the present time 00 to 70 per rent, o the chaff • produced' in Tins district went to Auckland, and if this trade were killed, there would be a big loss of revenue to the Railway Department. . The motion was carried unanimously. ' , :
