While three men were walking through a cutting between Halifax and Macknade at night they were set upon by a man with a knife, who evidently waited there. .John Lawson received two severe' stabs in the back and is not expected to recover. William Harriss received a deep stab in the chest and died shortly after. The Condition of the third man is at present unknown. Both injured men arc engine-driv-ers. The attack is said to he due to jealousy. David Ballinghal .another enginedriver, gave himself up to the police at Halifax soon alter the occurrence.
