It is generally believed on the waterfront that there will be no concerted action on the pa.rt of 'the shipowners, unless their hands are forced by the extremists in the union. / Members of the Maritime 'TJnions are. disconcerted by the move of the interstate shipping companies in paying off the crews of eight vessels at Melbourne and Ocelong. Shipowners state that the laying up of these vessels, which a.re Colliers, has no connection with the shipping trouble. They would have been taken out of commission in any ca.se this season. The overseas steamer Arabian is held up at Fromantle, her Chinese erew, numbering 42, having deserted. They had asked for improved 'conditions, Adelaide, Dee. 27. Referring to the dispute which has arisen on the steamer Baninsza, Morpbett, secretary* of the Adelaide Steamship Co., said job control was making it almost impossible for shipowners to carry on the transport scr vices of the Commonwealth' in a satisfactory way.
