PROPOSAL TO CURTAIL
COUNTy GOUNCIL PROTESTS
The Kiwitea County Council yesterday unanimously carried lite following motion of protest against, the proposal of the Postal Department to cut out the morning fan.il ft' oin Feilding to Kiniholtoii, and vice versa:—
Ors. L. T. McLean Stack-That tliis Council protests against the proposal to discontinue the. morning mail service from Feilding to Kimbolton and vice versa, and that the Clerk he instructed.to write, to the. Postmaster-General and the member for the district pointing out the disadvantages which would he experienced by the- settlers-jf the, service was discontinued.
Speaking to the motion, Cr. Stack said it was ridiculous to talk about cutting out this service, as it served so many areas 5 which would he otherwise he so neglected. "In some cases it would take four days to send a letter to Feilding and get a return if this service were dropped. Again, it was necessary to have connection with Rajigiwahia, which they would lose if they had not the convenience of the rniddav mail.
Cr. P. 11. McLean said Air Minson, who had" the contract at present, was one of the most capable officers they had ever had, ami he would not carry on with the Waituna mail unless he also had the morning run to Kimbo] ton.
Cr, Shannon a«iked if thee Kimbolton .people were, unanimous in support of the protest? The. Chairman (Cr. L. T. McLean) said a large meeting had already been held at Kimbolton which unanimously supported the 'protest. Kiwitea had (lone the same thing, and like Kimbolton had appointed delegates to wait on the Postmaster-General. Cheltenham hod a meeting which also, favoured supporting the protest. This particular service proposed to be dropped was the. one they should concentrate on. The question was, was ft necessary? ~7Te though it was. It was a connection for parts of the district which absolutely required tho service. The, district had in Minson a very capable; officer carrying the mails, who did the work with great credit, and they should endeavour to retain him. The settlers were unanimously trying fcb get him to continue. -Cr. Hair suggested that they might try to include in the route the Forest road, where there woye several settlers who should receive consideration. It Would, he understood, cost very little; Jf anything more. Tho Council thought it would he wise to concentrate, on the protest in the motion at present. The motion wa4 carried unanimously.
