"RINGING IN" CASKS

COMMENT BY PRESIDENT ROWE OF AUCKLAND T.C. Tito recent "ringing in" cases wcjre mentioned' by Mr J. Rowe,"the president of the Auckland Trotting Club, at the annual meeting ol that club. "During the year, - ' he said, "there have been discovered some of the worst cases of malpractice that have ever been heard of in connection with trotting. 1 am pleased to think that it was in no way a discovery of general evil-doing, but just a nest of conspirators who had been guilty of a. number of crimes before being discovered. It is now a matter of history that the New Zealand Trotting Association, taking the matter in hand, and working in conjunction with the police, sheeted the crimes home to the guilty ones, who are now .suffering the penalty. I think that the senimposed will act as the finest deterrent it would be possible to lind, and with the extra, precautions which are being taken should prevent any further malpractices." Mr Roue further stated that lie could not allow an opportunity to pass without saying good word for our stipendiary stewards. The good oll'ect of the work done by these gentlemen was continually in evidence. They were to be commended for the energy and tact which they displayed in the carrying out of* their duties on their courses. NOTES AND COMMENTS. Star Ranger ran fairly well in his races at Riecarton, and will see a better day.

Yoma, was unlucky in bumping up against such, a good horse as Wassail, but his turn will come.

Mainly due to the services ol Rangi Thompson, Tinohaka jumped much straighter at Riecarton in his races than he did at Treutbam.

Sfurdee is unlikely to race again, as Mr Yallance hua expressed the intention of retiring him from the race track.

Thcro were several horses that Jinished behind Wassail at Riccarton that will hit the l'roul at some oi\;the early spring meetings.

Miss Minerva is Aery quick off thJ mark, lias a lot of pace, but lacks stamina. A. hack scurry is well within her compass. ...

After Omahu's showing in,., his races over hurdles last week, Mr J. Bull will no doubt come to the,conclusion that steeplcchusing suits him better.

When Pamplona went- wrong on the. eve of the Grand National it robbed Mr L. C. Hazlett of as good an opportunity of Avinning tho big cross-country race as any owner could get.
