OPENING SESSION YESTERDAY
ELOCUTION AND MUSIC
Yesterday the opening session of tho Feilding and District Public Schools A.A.A. elocutionary and musiaal •competitions took place at the Drill/'Hall. The judges were Mr If. (mimic; and Mr L. YF. Though the standard of work done, by the competitors yesterday was not up to that of 5 previous competitions, some fino examples of elocution were offered for the judge's discrimination. .
For the concert last night there was a fair attendance' of the public, arid the audience were appreciative of the work given-by the youthful performers. The following was the programme: -Piano duet, Misses C Gilford and L Bridge; recitation, "Mrs Brown," Nellie Marsdon'; vocal solo. "Big Lady. Moon," Miss I. Cleland.; recitation, "Who I'd Be," Alifitcr Evans; Irish jig,. Miss D. Shapleslu; dialogues by Manchester street school and To Arakura ;, vocal dnet competition; recitation in character, Miss .lean Christensen ; action song competition; Highland fling, W. McLcod; vocal duct competition; unison song and. rounds. Both judges, in announcing their awards, offered valuable advice to competitors. THE AWARDS. At the concert in the evening the dialogue contest was decided. The To. Arakura girls were placed first, with a sketch from "Alice in Wonderland," and Manchester street "Mrs Bardoll'K Delusion") second. The judge complimented the children, hut added the Pickwick sketch was rather over the heads of the performers.
Vocal duet, under 12.—K. Hill and A. Triplow (Manchester street) 1, H. Rcnnett and E. Mikklosen(Te Arakura) and N. McNaoi and T. Williams (Kiwitea) tied for second p\i\c<i.
Pecitation in character, Secondary and Technical.- -Leach Cliristcnsen 2 (only entry). The judge was unduly severe on this competitor for attempting a Cockney representation. Action song.—Te Arakura 1 and 2, Kiwitea 3. The judge congratulated the winners on their pretty work. Vocal duet, Secondary and Technical. —1). Summer and P. Lees 1, 'Frances and Eileen Povere 2.
Unison song and round.—Manchester street No. l 1, Te Arakura 2, Manchester street No. 2 3. . The T judge said the team placed, second ■ had secured the highest number of marks for the round, though not in the aggregate. TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME.
