There is no place, so suitable as Singapore for a base, and the matter intensely concerns Australia' India. New Zealand, and a number of the Crown Colonies, who are looking to the present British fifuVernment to ermember that every c-Ttf/.en rtiiU every country in the Empire rfl entitled lo protection from the possibility of an attack from a foreign foe Singapore wanted defensive purposes. New Zealanders had hoped that the leson of the sufferings ol the navy and mercantile marine in the Pacific during the late war would not so quickly he forgotten. The very existence of Empire depends on the navy.
