It is understood that sinre 1917 approximately £31,000 had been spent in overhauling the Sumatra. The value of the ship, after a survey, lias been estimated in shipping , chicles at £SOOO. Melbourne, July 4. Premier Bruce, replying to a question in the' House of Representatives respecting the Sumatra, quoted the report Captain Richardson, riio commanded the* vessel for a considerable period prior to her lasi voyage to Sydney. The report stated that the author of the statement that the Sumatra was not seaworthy does not know his subject. It is a great pity sueli statements are published concerning these disasters.
