CONCESSIONS GRANTED TO
FARMERS
A short time ago ft conference of representatives of : various dairy coin.panies in the Palnierston North districfc was held, when several grievances in connection with railway facilities accorded tho dairying industry and other complaints were voiced before Mr F. A. Grant, commercial agent to the New Zealand Railways Department. As a result of the conference the matters referred to have been investigated and the following communication has been received by Mr P. Hansen, chairman of the Awahuri Dairy Company, from Mr Grunt:— / "At the conference of yourself and the representatives of several other dairy companies in Palmerston North recently, Mr J. A. Nash, MiP., stated that the ''railway rate on benzine had , been reducflil by one-third, but the rate on motor spirits, distillate, etc., had not been reduced. I have the honour to inform you that the rate on motor spirit, distillate, gasoleno, naphtha and naphthaline has been reduced by ouo-third aad these oils ore now carried at the same rate as benzine. I shall bo glad if you will knidly adrise the other dairy factories represented at the meeting accordingly. With, regard to the use of insulated waggons for the conveyance of butter and cheese to the cool stores, I bayOj -pica-sure in informing; you arrangements have been made for this class of wagon to Ijo supplied iu future when available. You will, of courso, readily understand thai the insulated waggons will not be available when required for the conveyance of frozen meat from the works to the ship." The following donirnunifcation.' hsts also been received by Mr Hansen from the General Manager of Railways (Mr R. W. MoVillv) in regard to freight reductions: "With refeienc© to your letter of the 12th inst., regarding the question of. a reduction in the freight rates for dairy produce, I have the honour to inform you that", at the 1 present time, the whole matter of freights is under consideration. As soon as possibia. an announcement will be made as to the decision arrired at."
