ANNUAL ELECTIONS LAST NIGHT. NO QUESTIONS AT ISSUE. Annual meetings of householders for the election of School Committees wer held throughout the district last night. MANCHESTER STREET SCHOOL. There was a small attendance of householders at the Manchester street school. Mr 11. Mclntyre was voted to the chair. The annual report showed that over £lO had been spent during the past year on improvements—asphalting, etc. —in the school grounds. Parents were appealed to to support the incoining committee in their effort to raise £IOO towards the cost of the purchase of an additional acre of land for the girls' playground. The cost of this land would be £2OO, and the Government would give subsidy on subscriptions for the -"rpose. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £B3 18s 7d, including £3O of special funds. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. A letter was read from the Secretary of the Educational Institute asking the householders to press upon the Government the need for giving liberal financial support to education. —The letter was received, the meeting being satisfied the Government was doing its best under present conditions. The following_ were the nominations for the Committee: Mesdames JDarragh and P. G. Miles, Messrs H. Mclntyre, .las. Campbell, J. E. ,Barltrop. E. G. Bridge, A. R. Skelton. W. G. Baker and G. Fitzpatrick. This being the required number, were declared elected.
A vote of thanks was passed tc Mr E. J. Waekrill, lion: auditor • also to the Star for giving support and publicity to all educational matters. The new Committee met afterwards and re-elected Mr Mclntyre Chairman and Mr Jas. Campbell Secretary. LYTTON STREET SCHOOL. Evidently the residents had no fault to find with the work of their representatives, for nobody but-the members of the incoming committee turned up at the householders' meeting last night. Was not the work of the committee worth a word of appreciation ? Mr James Penney occupied the chair, and in his remarks said the new system of electing the committee did not seem conducive to large meetings. Some might take it as a compliment not to be disturbed but he would prefer and appreciate, however, the presence of parents. It would help the committee very much to he'ar the opinion of the .parents on school matters. This did not seem to happen unless some debatable question was in the air. The report and balance-sheet were read by the secretary (Mr O. Aldis), the committee having a balance at the end of the financial year of £4O 15s sd. These were adopted on the motion of the Chairman and seconded by Mrs Sandford. Messrs Mingiiis and Fitzgerald voiced the appreciation of the meeting to Mr Stewart and his staff for their continued good work. Thanks were also heartily given to Mr Thos. Page for his services as auditor; also to Mr E. B. Short for his ready assistance in the prize fund. Mr Fitzgerald thought Mr Penney deserved the special thanks of the parents for the way he had carried out his duties as chairman. Mr Penney took a very keen interest in the school, and gave a lot of time in getting information for the use of the committee, and in other ways was of great assistance to them and the scholars. The Ministers' Association were not forgotten, Mr Aldis voicing the senti-, ment. The Chairman declared the members of the new committee to be Mesdames J. W. Bramwell and A. E. : Sandford, Messrs 0. Aldis, T. F. Fitzgerald, H. R. Jenkins, A. H. Maclean, W. Mingins, James Penney and A. H. Sutton. The committee met after the householders' meeting and Messrs James Penney and 0. Aldis were elected chairman and secretary respectively. The scheme of asphalting paths, etc., was gojie into, and it was decided to submit same to the Board and ask for a subsidy. If approved, tenders to be called for the work. It was agreed to leave the question of the tennis court over for the present. A letter of thanks from St. John's vestry for the use of schoolroom for services was received. Messrs Jenkins and Mingins were appointed Visiting Committee for the ensuing month and asked to report at next meeting as to estimated cost of renewing a portion of the fencing.
