NEW ZEALANDERS AT PLAY.
Ouit Dominion is being fairly well advertised abroad just now by the efforts and achievements of her sons dnd daughters in friendly competition with experts of other countries. Wo have n tennis team playing in Australia, and the critics have more than a good word to say for Miss Curtis, of Napier. Tennis is a game at which we ought to succeed, and we should not let our ambitions rest with the production of an Anthony Wilding. We should still strive to justify a place in the Davis Cup contests. Some day we may have a New Zealand team going for tbe world trophy, "t hen there is the Timaruvian, McConachy, keeping our end up in the Mother Country as a crack billiardist. Ho is young yet, and may even reach the world's championship, although he failed this year. Over in Melbourne that clever Oamaru chess champion, Davies, played up so well for the Australian championship that during the final days he was full of promise. As it was, a Victorian secured the coveted honour, with a substantial 11 wins out of 13 games, whilst the New Zealand champion got 1\ wins. The play was all tho keener in this latest tourney because the representation of Australasia at the coming European tournament hung upon the issue. Mr. Davies is to be congratulated upon having so worthily represented his Dominion against the pick of the Australian players. Presently the Australians are to get another demonstration of tho many-sidedness of the Now Zealanders, when our Maori j team of footballers crosses the Tas- | man Sea to try conclusions against Australia's best in tho Rugby game.
