DAIRY PRODUCE POOL.

SOUTH ISLAND PROPOSAL. (Per Press Association.) Dunedin, April 27. An extraordinary general meeting of the South Island Dairy Association was held this morning for the purpose of discussing the possibility of establishing a compulsory pool to handle tho whole of t he export of butter and cheese. Mr J. R. Thacker occupied the chair, and there was a very large attendance of members of tho Association. The meeting, which was not open to the press, lasted all day. Most of the argument revolved round the point as to whether the pool should be n Dominion pool or a separate North and South Islaid pool. A motion was moved bv Air Agar as follows: “That this meeting is of opinion that an improved system of marketing is not only desirable, but .necessary, in the interests of dairy producers, but is of opinion that a Dominion pool is undesirable, and that the interests of the South Island can be served best by a South Island pool for all dairy produce, and that wo offer to co-operate with the North,-both here and in I million , but insist upon retaining control of our produce.” Air Parker moved, ns an amendment, “That in the opinion of this meeting a Dominion pool is a very desirable tiling.” The mover said that his intention was that the scheme should be a compulsory scheme. On a ballot being taken, tho amendment was carried by 45 votes to 41. On the amendment being put as the motion, another ballot was called for. This resulted in the motion being lost by 45 votes to 44. The business was thus left in the air, so to speak. Mr Bowman then moved, and Mr Agar seconded, “That a committee of five be set up to meet delegates from the North Island and discuss all phases of the pool, and report to the annual meeting of the Association.” This motion was carried.
