PLEA FOR BOOKMAKERS.

LICENSING PROPOSAL. A petition is to be presented to the House of Representatives asking that bookmakers should be licensed under proper safeguards, and that a select committee should be set up to take evidence on a proposal to amend the Gaming Act to allow that to be done. The petition has been circulated from Wellington by the Dominion Sports’ Association. It sets out that it would be much more satisfactory in the interests of public morality for the State to license bookmakers to carry on their business on racecourses only, under proper control by the New Zealand Racing Conference and the New Zealand Trotting Conference, and with due provision for the protection of public revenue.
