RETRENCHMENT.
IN GOVERNMENT SERVICE

(Pei- Press Association.) Dargaville, Feb. 22. Speaking at the opening oi the new post oilico at To Kopuru erected at a cost of £3169, the Hon. J. G. Coates said the post office operations of the Dominion would show £IOO,OOO as profit this year. Ho wished it were £200,000, for they must get into a position to enable the cost of the services to bo reduced. He said the public services must pay their .way, but the services should be made as reasonable as possible, so that their cost would correspond to the standard of income of those using them. Speaking of Government retrenchment, ho said that when these proposals were completed the cost of government would bo down to the 1913-14 figures. Ho was sure they would pull through the hard times all right. Team work was required to do this. All must do their part.
