MR W. G. PEARCE ON HIS RETIREMENT.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I was a little surprised tonight to see notices in the papers here in connection with the election of County Councillors and members of Hospital Boards. I was under the impression it took place later in the month. As I do not intend seeking re-election to the Council or Board I am writing you to let the ratepayers know. Having served 31 years on the Oroua Council and about 20 years on the Hospital Board I may claim to have done my bit. There are several reasons why I havo come to this decision: (i) I have been medically advised to take things a little easier. (2) I hope to have some liberty to visit other parts beyond our shores during the next [ew years. (3) As the war has faded into tlie past, and we hope we are at tlie dawning of a new day, we want to drop our go slow policy and put some vigor and push into our reconstruction policy, this will opportunity to a younger man. It is with some regret that I hare decided to take tin's step. My connection with tin's kind of work has been one of the greatest pleasures of my life.

I am on the look out for the latest tips in road construction up here. I a convinced that the tar-sealed road is the road of tlie future. I think our Council has started out on the right lines in securing up-to-date road-making plant with a, view to provide a strong foundation on which to construct the road of the future, but I think they should go still further and capitalise a portion of their general rate each year so as to be able to tar-seal the main roads in the near future. The saving in wear and tear and benzine and the comfort of a good road would prove that the money was well invested.—l am. etc.. W. G. PEARCE. New Plymouth, 27/10/20.
