KIWITEA ROAD-MAKING.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—-It is not my intention to supply the ratepayers with tlie statement your correspondent, Mr Wright, suggests should be given, as 1 teel sure most of them are sufficiently intelligent to understand the use to which a stone crusher or other machine may be put.- However, I am glad to see Mr Wright is interested in the road-makingmiachinery, though I think he is a bit low in his estimate of six stones to the yard as the amount of metal that requires crushing, from Kimbolton's pit. I personally had the pleasure of assisting to spread the first: load of metal delivered on the road from that pit with the dump truck, and! can say without fear of contradiction, that 20 per cent, of it required crushing. It is the intention of the Council, if possible, to treat all-metal in future before laying it down. First, to avoid the expense of hand-breaking, which is very costly j secondly, to ensure the even setting of the metal and reducing the percentage of loose stones which are knocked off the road and lost: and, thirdly, to secure an even grade of metal that ■■ will wear an even surface, giving a minimum of. friction to motor tyres and a maximum of comfort to the travelling public. The cost of crushing metal from Kimbolton pit is less than Is per yard at present, and when the screens aie iw the cost will be much less owing to the extra amount it will be capable of handling daily, and it will pay in the long run if only 5 per cent.of the metal requires crushing. The metal in question has special adhesive qualities, it does not unravel in_ <U> Sher/ which makes it most suitable foi top-dressing roads, and that chier- ]? explains-its-being used at a longer distance from the pit than otherwise* bs the case. If Mr Wiight will read the letter'(advertised in the 'Stak) addressed to the ratepa> cis OT the subject of road machinery, I am sure he will support, the loan if he consults his own interests as a late payer -- lam ARTUkE.PEARCE Chairman Kiwitea County Council.
