I Mrs Len. Watkiji will be unable to take 'this week's classes' at-the Feilding Technical School owing to illlness. The medical men and staff of the Palmerston North public hospital' have had a portrait of the matron (Misj McLagan) painted. This they presented to her fo mark the occasion of her having completed 21 years of service iv the hospital. "A great ad-, ministrator, an efficient nurse, a hater of humbugs, and a heart of gold," is how Aye heard her once described. On the occasion of his ninetieth birthday,, celebrated recently, the Rev. James Paterson was the recipient of hearty congratulations from the Wellington Presbytery and many other friends. For many years he had charge of St. John's Church/Wellington, and still holds the position of senior minister. He is enjoying very good health, and continues to do active ministerial work. After ailing for .some time past as 'the result of sunstroke contracted on active service with, the N.Z.E.F. in Egypt, Mr W. G. C. Smith died at his residence, Palmerston North, on Wednesday night. He was a well-known flaxmiller for thirty yeaig, and held the rank of captain in the Mounted Rifles at Home and in the field. He was 46 years of age, and was the eldest son of Mr O. L. Smith, <>f Frasertowii, ■ Hnwke's Bay. In 1914, at the outbreak of war. he volunteered for service abroad, and rose from the rank of lieutenant to captain, being invalided back after 3_ years' service.
