* An offer of £400 was made for Starland at New Plymouth, but Mr Stead asked £600 for the eon of Martian. Mr G. L. Stead recently otf£f etl £1000 for the hack Santorini. This gelding cost the bookies four times that amount when he won last Monday.
Mr J. B. Joll recently bought 61 acres near the Egmont racecourse, and intends to erect thereon axi up-to-date brick stable which, besides sheltering his own horses (says a writei" Iti the Taranaki Herald) will also house Affectation and Co., which will be raced by Mr Joll during Mr McDonald's absence in England. Mr Joll has offered the position of private trainer of tho team to a young Hawkc's Bay trainer; the position will carry a big salary.
Alice Mont rose, who won tho Scurry :iii tho second ilny of tho Tarannki meeting and paid over a quarter of i century, was originally bought" b> Mr G. Brown, of Royal Chef fame, the* figure paid being-SOs. Mr Brown sold her to the present owner for £5.
