NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Two of the progeny of Solfenno, m Admvra and Valley Rose, were successful at tho Feilding meeting. Murihiku can go fast for five furlongs. Croesus made a big effort to comeback in th o Oroua Stakes. Ho was only beaten a head in the last couple ot strides by Acre, who, however, had to come from a long way back. There is no doubt that C. Price retains his ability to ride out his mounts. The two finishing efforts ho took part in on Acre and Arrowfield were evidence that he has lost none of his brilliancy.
Cheval has no liking for tho hurdle business. Ho tipped his rider off at the first hurdle on the opening clay, and ran off at th© first obstacle the second day. She is only a four-year-old, which seems rather an oarly ago for recruits to the lepping game. One of these days C onziska will surprise people. He put in a good finishing effort in tho Nikau Hack. Demos was prominent for over a mile in tho Manchester Handicap. Ho must have registered something good on the quiet, as the son of Demosthenes was a well-backed third favourite. Hvmestra has turned very sour at tho barrier, and on both days, at Foildiiig caused no end of bother. It is said he scot the tapes caught in his mouth whilo ill Victoria, which inflicted some damage, and sinco then has been rather fractious when lined up at tho barrier. However, the son of Hymettus got away well enough in both his starts. Hushman is to bo put to the hurdle business. He has paid his way fairly well, but would havo done bettor had tho son of Husbandman been persuaded to run in behind. He boats himself by hitting the front early and fighting for his head. Ho should prove an acquisition to tho ranks of hurdlers, which at present aro not of high-class. Hushman ran second in a hurdle race last season at Bulls. Tho good performance put up by S'waneo River in tho Feilding Stakes on tlie first day, in which tho filly ran fourth, caused a run on her in the Nikau Hack cm tho second day. SheWon as easily as the machine anticipated it. Ruddy must be nearly out of the hack class. The horses which caused the long delay at tho start of the Oroua Stakes should have been sent on tho outer by tbe starter. The tapes were repeatedly broken by boys trying to get a fly. Ashley Reed went through three times in an endeavour to win from tho jump-off on Trentham Rose. It is up to Mr. Skipwith to be a little more strict and impose stiff fines. In some events there was too much of tho walking-up to tho barrier sort of stuff indulged in by some riders, and this should bo knocked on the head.
