MAGISTRATE'S COURT
THIS MORNING'S BUSINESS. .Before Mr. Hewitt, S.M.) CASES OF DRUNKENNESS. Four first offenders in drunkenness were dealt with in the usual manner. Florcnco V. Smith, tho wife of a Palmerston. labourer, was fined 30s (her socond off once) for being drunk whilst she is a prohibited person. A Foilding man (for Whom Mr. Power pleaded guilty) unwisely celebrated his release from his prohibition order just a few hours prematurely. It cost him, besides payment for the load of liquor ho carried, £1, and 7s costs.
RAID ON CHELTENHAM HOTEL.
On November 22, at 8.10 p.m., Sergt. Cahill and Constable MacDonnell paid a surprise visit to the Cheltenham Hotel. The sequel was heard in court this morning, when three men —Thos. Murphy, R. Christenson, and B. Bingerr—pleaded guilty to being on licensed premises after hours. They were each fined £1, with 7s costs.
The licensee, Alfred Walshaw (Mr. Power) was charged with supplying liquor. The hearing was adjourned until tho next sitting of the Court (tho 17th inst.).
ANOTHER LICENSING CASE. A similar charge against J . W. Speight (Mr. Ongley) was also adjourned until the 17th inst. ON THE CIVIL SIDE. The following judgments by default were given to plaintiffs: Levin and Co. v. W. J. Smith, £147 17s Bd, costs £7 3s 6d; E. Whitehea v. E. Riley, £7 3s 6d; E. Whitehead v. E. Riley, Kellv v. W. M.
