THE ITALIANS.

HOW THE ENEMY WAS CIRCUMVENTED.

Rome, September 4. The Corriere della Sera states that several thousand Austrians, concealed in caverns on tho Carso plateau, were instructed to remain there until the Italians reached the third and fourth of the Austrian Jines. Then they were to emerge from their hiding places and attack the Italians in the rear. It was planned to catch the Italians ihus between two fires. General Cadorna, foreseeing just such a danger, held another force in readiness to assail the emerging Austrians. This plan was successful, and several Austrian battalions in their entirety were taken prisoner.
