THE ITALIAN OFFENSIVE.
PUTTING ON THE PRESSURE
MORE POSITIONS CAPTURED
[BY KLKCIEIO TELEGRAPH--OOPTHIOHTI [Australian-N.Z. Cable Association.]
Erne, September 3. An Italian official message says: We repulsed counterattacks on the southern edge of Bainsizza Plateau, on the northern slopes of Monte San Gabrielle and eastward of Gorizia. We extended our gains in the Bestovizza Valley and captured a position on a 3500 metres height above the Upper Zebru Valley. DIGGING OUT THE ENEMY. Three hundred Austrians were completely isolated in Brestovizza Valley for 12 days. They fought desperately. Eventually, a bayonet charge ousted them. This is typical of the Austrians' resis the Carso, but our steady advance continues towards San Gabrielle and the encircling movement is developing uninterruptedly despite the use of nicked troops and furious counter-attacks. BOMB-DROPPING ON TRIESTE. London, September 3. A wireless Austrian official message says: The Italians dropped 70 bombs o n Trieste. STILL ADVANCING. (Received September 4, 10 a.m.) Rome, September 3. An Italian official message says: We have advanced further eastward of Brestovizza Valley. THE ENEMY HARD PRESSED. (Received September 4, 11.30 a.m.) Rome, September 3. The Italians are furiously bombarding Mount San Gabrielle and Mount San Daniele. Tho former has been completely isolated for the past week by our mountain batteries. The enemy's reply is feeble, owing to his heavy artillery having been removed to the Ternova plateau. The Austrian prisoners now coming in belong to reserve units.
