THEFT OF STAMPS.
OVER 20,000 DISAPPEAR
MAY HAVE BEEN DESTROYED
A big robbery of stamps was coni-| mitted at the Stamp Duties Office, in Phillip-street, Sydney, when over 20,000 of the new issue of 2d duty] strmps, valued , at about £200, disappeared mysteriously. ' How the theft was carried out has not been ascertained. All that is known is that a big parcel of the. stamps, which was in the main othce, was missed, and no> traeo of.it could be found. The police were informed, and cietectives and -departmental officers n-ade an investigation. But they were not able to obtain any information, and consequently the robbery is as great a mystery to-day as when it was discovered. As far is known the department has noo suffered any actual loss beyond .the value of the paper on which the str.mps were printed. All vendors of duty stamps were informed of the disappearance of tho parcel, and were warned against making purchases from unauthorised persons.- They were also invited by Mr W. H. Forrest (the Commissioner of * Stamp Duties) to 'communicate with tho department.
