DONE ITS BIT.
That the Railway Department has "done its bit" in regard to voluntary recruiting is claimed by the Hon. AY. H. Herries, Minister in charge. From the outbreak of tlio war in August, 1.911. until November, 1916. practically no restrictions wero placed in the way of railwaymen volunteering. A March 31 last year. 1728 members of the permanent staff had volunteered. Subsequently, 158 non-essential railwaymen volunteered, making a total of 2952 members of the permanent staff. Of the auxiliary or casual staff about 2500 have joined tho forces. The Railway Department has therefore released for military purposes 5152 trained railwaymeu. and is liable to still further demands on the remainder through the operations of tho Military Service Act."
