THE SHEARER.
Doaling with shearers' appeals hefore the Military Service Board, Uio Farmers' Union Advocate stated: It is. of course, only right that all ap-peals-which were adjourned sino die should be revived before the Second Division is reached, but there are, perhaps, other good reasons for the for the appeals of First Division being reviewed, as early in tho ballots shearers were exempted largely oi the ground that shearing was an »~ssential industry, and that the .caicity of shearers would seriously r, fleet the gathering of the wool harvest. Since then, however, it has been noticeable that this scarcity has been a gold-mine to some men who would rather stay at home and help shore the pleasure of higher pay than .share the privilege of fighting their country's battles. Shearers as a class are just as patriotic as any other section of the community, but they also nave their percentage of duty dodgers, md as all our military legislation is c.esigned not for the volunteer but for the hangers hack, so the resolution of the sheep-owners is not aimed al all shearers, but at the men who can he spared and who prefer not to go.
